December 2, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>At least 1,984 NGOs, including associations, trade unions and foundations, were dissolved between the 2020 presidential election and November 30, Lawtrend said in a report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The figure stood at 1,891 in late December 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of last month, at least 1,216 NGOs were ordered to shut down, and 768 filed for dissolution on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities interfere excessively in the activities of NGOs, including by conducting inspections, checks and searches, while the law enforcement agencies and secret services summon activists for interrogations and harass those in exile by launching criminal proceedings in absentia, Lawtrend noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dozens of civil society activists are held behind bars in Belarus, including at least five human rights defenders and 20 trade unionists, according to the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials are also directing significant efforts toward co-opting the non-profit sector, encouraging NGOs to support state-sponsored narratives, Lawtrend stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
