December 3, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on December 2 as police arrested Hleb Panasiuk upon his return from Poland, the Homiel branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a separate development, Stanis\u0142a\u016d Ma\u010da\u0142a\u016d and his wife \u015aviat\u0142ana Jakubovi\u010d in Homiel were given four and five years in prison, respectively, on charges of facilitating extremist activities, according to Viasna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities lowered the auction price for the apartment seized from exiled opposition politician Ja\u016dhien Vilski to 113,000 rubels (about $39,000) after failing to auction it off at a higher price, Pozirk<\/em> reported. Last year, Vilski was given 12 years in prison without being present at trial and was also fined 480,000 rubels ($165,500). In Belarus, he was accused of conspiring to seize power and participating in an extremist organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 1,984 NGOs, including associations, trade unions and foundations, were dissolved between the 2020 presidential election and November 30, Lawtrend said in a report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 40 jailed dissidents were released in October and November. However, as of December 3, human rights defenders identified at least 1,222 political prisoners. Their real number is considerably higher because of many undocumented cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
