December 4, <\/strong>Pozirk<\/strong>.<\/em> Dzianis Ku\u010dynski from the team of Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, who is now visiting Washington, met Christopher Smith, deputy assistant secretary for Eastern Europe at the US Department of State, Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s press office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian politician expressed gratitude to Smith and US Special Envoy John Coale \u201cfor their tireless efforts to free political prisoners and for their principled and strong leadership,\u201d according to his post on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, Ku\u010dynski met US Deputy National Security Advisor Andy Baker in Washington to discuss the impact of peace talks on Ukraine on the future of Belarus, ensuring Belarus’ sovereignty and its democratic transformation as well as deepening the strategic dialogue between the US and Belarus\u2019 pro-democracy forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His visit to the US comes shortly before Minsk\u2019s planned talks with a US delegation, which Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka announced for later this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian officials say that Minsk has been engaged in talks with Washington since mid-2024. Since then, the Belarusian ruler has pardoned more than 300 imprisoned regime critics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US President Donald Trump\u2019s engagement with Belarus may be a part of a long-term, broader strategy to pull Minsk out of Moscow\u2019s geopolitical orbit, if only marginally, US officials told Reuters<\/em> last month on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Minsk has freed dozens of detainees in several waves since Trump took office in January, his administration wants to secure the release of well over 100 prisoners in a single deal, the sources also told Reuters<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
