December 4, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Poland will maintain the no-go zone along its border with Belarus for another 90 days, the country\u2019s interior ministry announced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The buffer zone was first introduced on June 13 last year and has since been extended. It currently covers an area of approximately 61 kilometers along the border, under the jurisdiction of the Narewka, Bia\u0142owie\u017ca, Dubicze Cerkiewne and Czeremcha border posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Polish authorities, the entry restrictions are designed to protect police officers, border guards and military personnel, while also curbing the activities of smuggling groups involved in illegal crossings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe observe with satisfaction a reduction in migration pressure, but we don\u2019t consider it a sustainable process at this stage, and therefore we will take all measures to stop illegal migration along this route,\u201d said Deputy Interior Minister Czes\u0142aw Mroczek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The no-go zone also helps fight smuggling, the interior ministry said, noting that Polish officers apprehended 40 smugglers in the area since September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Polish government spent about 3 billion z\u0142otys ($830 million) in the last two years on measures to beef up border security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
