December 6, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed<\/a> that the New Safe Confinement (NSC) at the Chernobyl power plant damaged by a drone earlier this year had lost its primary safety functions, including the confinement capability, its press office reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The assessment also found no permanent damage to the load-bearing structures or monitoring systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The February 14 drone strike caused a fire at the confinement shelter that was extinguished only in early March. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the shelter was hit by a Russian drone but Russia denied any claims that it targeted the Chernobyl plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attack damaged the shelter\u2019s outer and inner cladding and its main cranes, affecting its safe operation, according to Ukraine\u2019s State Agency on Exclusion Zone Management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLimited temporary repairs have been carried out on the roof, but timely and comprehensive restoration remains essential to prevent further degradation and ensure long-term nuclear safety,\u201d IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agency recommended continuing restoration and protective work on the NSC, including humidity control, upgraded corrosion monitoring and a modernized automatic monitoring system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will fund additional temporary repairs at Chernobyl next year to restore the NSC\u2019s confinement function, the IAEA said, noting it maintains a permanent team on site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A catastrophic explosion at Chernobyl in 1986 sent a plume of radioactive material into the air, triggering a public health emergency across Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While the immediate disaster was mitigated and an exclusion zone was established, the incident saw a rise in cancer rates in the surrounding population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NSC was designed to prevent further radioactive material leaking out over the next century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
