December 7, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> A judge in Homiel sentenced Alaksiej Jahie\u0142a, 41, to a prison term on charges of facilitating extremism, the Viasna Human Rights Center said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His persecution is linked to the now-defunct Bie\u0142aruski Hajun online initiative that monitored Russian military activities in Belarus since 2022. Founded after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the project folded in February, soon after unknown individuals gained access to its chatbot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jahie\u0142a, a trained medical professional, is also known as a Baptist preacher. He is currently held at a pre-trial detention center in Homiel. The exact term of his imprisonment remains unknown. In late November, authorities branded him as \u201cinvolved in extremist activities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rights defenders know of more than 100 defendants in the Bie\u0142aruski Hajun case. However, the total number of those persecuted is significantly higher as the arrests are still taking place across Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
