December 8, <\/strong>Pozirk<\/strong>.<\/em> A democratic, independent and pro-European Belarus could strengthen the European Union’s stability and the security of its eastern flank, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has stressed in her address to a high-level event in Brussels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU must guard its own interests at the peace talks on Ukraine, which will have an impact on its entire neighborhood, the politician said, noting that a potential peace agreement will also define the future of Belarus, Moldova and the Caucasus countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regardless of the direction the peace talks might go, the EU will play a crucial role in Belarus\u2019 future, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian opposition is convinced that the EU will also speak on behalf of the Belarusians at the peace talks, Cichano\u016dskaja said, stressing that Russia must leave Ukraine and remove its troops and nuclear weapons from Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exiled opposition has been developing its vision of a democratic Belarus over the past few years to use a potential window of opportunity that the peace talks may open, the politician added. A group of experts have already drafted reforms and legislation to stabilize democracy, dismantle corruption, restore justice and bring Belarus closer to Europe, she noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
