December 11, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>Yesterday, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution on international cooperation and coordination of efforts to address the consequences of the Chernobyl disaster, the UN press office reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus submitted its own version with minor amendments, but the Assembly ultimately adopted Ukraine\u2019s text. Ninety-seven countries voted in favor of the Ukraine-drafted resolution, 39 abstained and eight, including Belarus, Russia and the United States, opposed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resolution highlights long-term serious consequences of the Chernobyl disaster and the needs of the affected communities and territories, noting serious concerns over the New Safe Confinement damaged earlier this year in a drone attack. The incident jeopardized decades of international progress in ensuring the safety of the facility, it said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The General Assembly plans to convene a special meeting on April 24, 2026, to mark the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. It also called on the international community to support Ukraine in restoring the plant\u2019s damaged infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN Andriy Melnyk criticized Belarus for submitting an alternative draft resolution without consulting Ukraine, noting that Minsk \u201chas lost any moral right to initiate documents on Chernobyl,\u201d Ukrinform<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Melnyk stressed that the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was among the first sites targeted by Russia when it launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, including through the Belarus border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
