{"id":167909,"date":"2025-12-12T19:07:53","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T16:07:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/167909\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"lithuanian-mep-urges-european-countries-to-prosecute-minsk-regime-for-crime-against-humanity","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/167909\/","title":{"rendered":"Lithuanian MEP urges European countries to prosecute Minsk regime for crime against humanity"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>December 12,&nbsp;<em>Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Dainius \u017dalimas, a Lithuanian MEP and former chairman of the Constitutional Court, has criticized European countries for not launching pretrial investigations into crimes against humanity perpetrated by Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Investigators in Poland, Latvia and other countries could interview Belarusian victims of persecution and issue international and European arrest warrants, he told the <em>Obychnoye Utro<\/em> show on YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou know, there are plenty of criminals in Belarus who deserve arrest warrants,\u201d he said. \u201cI put it simply: every Belarusian so-called judge, because they can hardly be called judges, who sends someone to prison for taking part in a demonstration, for any protest against \u0141uka\u0161enka, they are criminals. They must be prosecuted,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Lithuania investigates crimes committed by Belarus\u2019 security officers during mass protests in 2020, he said his country has not been doing enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI know Lithuanian prosecutors who are waiting, I\u2019d say, doing nothing, although they could take certain measures, even issue international arrest warrants,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They seem to be waiting for the regime to fall in order to take down the persecution system as a whole, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lithuania launched an investigation in December 2020, acting on a complaint from a Belarusian victim about torture by police in Minsk. The Prosecutor General\u2019s office said that the case was opened under universal jurisdiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, Lithuania referred a case to the International Criminal Court, asking it to launch an investigation into forced deportation, persecution and cruel treatment of opposition supporters by the Belarusian regime.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>December 12,&nbsp;Pozirk.
