December 18, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>The European Parliament (EP) has strongly condemned ongoing hybrid attacks on Lithuania by Belarus in a resolution adopted today by a vote of 438 in favor, 47 against and 48 abstentions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The document lists drone and balloon incursions, instrumentalized migration, economic coercion, smuggling operations, military provocations, cyberattacks and state-sponsored disinformation as hybrid attacks. These are “deliberate, coordinated and hostile and part of a broader Russia-led strategy to undermine the EU, the member states\u2019 governments and NATO,” it noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MEPs expressed their full solidarity with Lithuania and other member states targeted by Belarusian hybrid attacks, stressing that these threats affect the EU as a whole and require a united response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The document calls for strengthened EU-NATO cooperation on Lithuanian airspace surveillance, including air-policing rotations and coordinated responses to balloon and drone\u00a0incursions. It described the ban on Lithuanian trucks to leave Belarus as \u201cillegal detention and intimidation of European freight operators, which constitute acts of coercion aimed at an EU member state.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus should immediately cease all hybrid attacks against Lithuania, release all European carriers, and compensate them for financial losses, while ensuring the safety of civil aviation and border crossings, the EP urged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MEPs welcomed the recent adoption of a new sanctions criterion covering hybrid attacks and called for additional targeted sanctions against Belarusian officials, state-owned and private entities and individuals involved in hybrid operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
