December 18, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Vilnius is drafting legislation that would allow reciprocal measures if Minsk confiscates Lithuanian trucks stranded in Belarus, Lithuania’s Justice Minister Rita Tama\u0161unien\u0117 has told \u017dini\u0173 Radijas<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAt present, there is no indication that the trucks will be seized in Belarus, and the discussion remains theoretical,\u201d the official said. The Ministry of Justice carefully reviewed the available assets and the legal options for applying countermeasures in case of attempts to seize the property of Lithuanian citizens or businesses in Belarus, she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tensions between Belarus and Lithuania currently cannot be resolved through diplomacy as Belarus continues targeting Lithuania with incursions of weather balloons and instrumentalization of irregular migration, the official noted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018So far, our government has not mentioned a full restoration of diplomatic relations. We are talking about a technical level of resolving issues that specifically concern trucks and balloons that are not controlled by the Belarusian side,\u201d Tama\u0161unien\u0117 said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Up to 200 Lithuania-registered trucks are stuck at the Belarusian border, the Lithuanian Customs Department reported earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trucks entered Belarus before Lithuania closed the border in late October and were not allowed to leave after Lithuania reopened the Medininkai\u2013Kamienny \u0141oh and \u0160al\u010dininkai\u2013Bieniakoni checkpoints on November 20. The vehicles are parked at designated sites, with a fee of \u20ac120 per day charged for each truck or semi-trailer. Minsk reportedly threatened to confiscate them in four months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian officials insist on a meeting of diplomats to sort out contentious issues, but Vilnius sticks to its ban on official contacts with the Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka regime introduced after the disputed 2020 presidential election in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian ruler stressed that Minsk will not release Lithuania-registered trucks with cargoes unless Vilnius agrees to direct negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
