December 18,<\/strong> Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Lithuania takes pride in hosting exiled Belarusian journalists and providing them safety, Lithuanian Seimas Speaker Juozas Olekas has told a journalistic forum in Vilnius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe welcome you here and sympathize with your personal sacrifices. We value your work even more because you continue to resist the authoritarian regime,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During global conflicts, the struggle is fought not only on the front lines, but also in the information space, Olekas noted. \u201cOur enemies use various tools of hybrid attacks: disinformation and fake news. Journalists are destined to perform a specific task \u2014 to maintain their professionalism in these very difficult conditions, while remaining a source of important, transparent and truthful information,\u201d the politician added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are ready to make every effort to help you gain your freedom of speech,\u201d said Audrys Antanaitis, chairman of the Lithuanian Journalists’ Union. \u201cIt is painful to see that some colleagues remain in prison simply for expressing their thoughts and opinions freely. This should not be happening. We hope that the situation will change and that these problems can be resolved in a civilized manner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 28 media workers are held behind bars in Belarus, according to the Belarusian Association of Journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
