December 19,<\/strong> Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Russian content has dominated Belarusian culture over the past year, accounting for 95 percent of the cultural space, said Siarhiej Budkin, in charge of the exiled Belarusian Council for Culture (BCC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRussia strongly influences music, literature, cinema and the show business,” he noted. \u201cIndependent Belarusian initiatives are effectively excluded from the official discourse.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Budkin identified a total state control as another trend of this year in the cultural sphere. \u201cWe continue to see the persecution of free thought and intellectual protest, with long prison terms handed down for acts of creativity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The BCC head noted that Belarusian businesses\u2019 growing interest in Belarusian-language products, aimed at distinguishing themselves from Russian offerings, is a positive development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian cultural initiatives within the country now operate under semi-clandestine conditions, yet culture continues to seek new forms of existence, Budkin noted. Among the strategies he listed curtailing creativity or deliberately staying out of the spotlight, working underground in closed or semi-public formats, adapting to the authorities\u2019 demands, living in Belarus while creating for foreign audiences or imitating loyalty to the current authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
