December 19, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The seventh All-Belarusian People’s Assembly (UNS) in Minsk has unanimously approved a program of socio-economic development of Belarus for 2026\u20132030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian Prime Minister Alaksandar Tur\u010dyn presented the document projecting the economy to grow by at least 3 percent per year, or 15.8 percent over five years. Investments are expected to increase by 16.7 percent by 2030; exports of goods and services, by 19.5 percent; real disposable incomes, by 21 percent, according to the document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tur\u010dyn acknowledged that insufficient export diversification, low investment activity and a small share of the service sector in GDP are among the main constraints. Problems are exacerbated by demographic challenges, including an ageing population, declining birth rates and migration, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new five-year program aims to effectively overcome both external threats and internal challenges, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Formed by Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka in 1996, the UNS was given constitutional status after the controversial February 2022 referendum. \u0141uka\u0161enka was elected its chairman in an uncontested vote last year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Designed as a state body comprised of \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s supporters, the UNS has a maximum of 1,200 members with a five-year mandate who must convene at least once a year to set out the strategic priorities for society and the government. The UNS powers include proposing legislation and constitutional amendments, approving foreign and domestic policies and impeaching the president. Earlier, \u0141uka\u0161enka said the UNS comprised his allies only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The UNS should play its role without interfering in other state agencies\u2019 activities, \u0141uka\u0161enka said earlier this year, warning against more \u201cmeetings, correspondence and formalism\u201d as well as \u201cpitting one government body against another.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On another occasion, he also played down the role of the revamped UNS, stressing that it should not dominate other branches of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
