December 20, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has praised the Committee for State Security (KGB) for contributing to the adoption of political decisions crucial for Belarus and its people, as he congratulated the agency on the Day of the State Security Officer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFrom generation to generation, KGB officers have been improving their accumulated experience and effectively solving the most complex tasks, responding to national security challenges,\u201d his press office quoted the message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since coming to power in 1994, \u0141uka\u0161enka has relied on the Belarusian KGB, which is continuing the legacy of its Soviet predecessor, to carry out politically-motivated persecution of the opposition. The KGB maintains lists of so-called \u201cterrorists\u201d and \u201cextremist groups,\u201d targeting individuals and organizations that challenge the current regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

KGB chief Ivan Tertel frequently takes part in key meetings and negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
