December 23, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> A judge in Pinsk, Brest region, sentenced a foreigner whose citizenship was not specified to three months in prison for facilitating illegal migration via Belarus, the Prosecutor General’s Office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May, the defendant and his wife, who was reportedly unaware of the illegal migration scheme, used passenger cars to transport 14 citizens of Central Asian countries from Minsk to the Belarusian-Ukrainian border. The foreigners intended to bypass the border checkpoints and were headed to European Union countries without required documents, prosecutors said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of them had previously made repeated attempts to cross irregularly into Poland but were stopped by the Polish border guards, they added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of December, Belarus\u2019 western neighbors thwarted 357 attempts by undocumented migrants who used Belarus as a route to the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
