December 23, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka has appointed D\u017amitryj Hora, former head of the Investigative Committee, as new prosecutor general, his press office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kanstancin By\u010dak from the Committee for State Security’s (KGB) investigative department will take over as the Investigative Committee chief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka suggested that the new Prosecutor General expand his office\u2019s role beyond anti-corruption efforts, taking on powers currently managed by the Belarusian Security Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the appointment, he also stressed that the Prosecutor General’s office is \u201cvery seriously investigating the genocide of the Belarusian people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have already uncovered so many facts that it is difficult to find anything else, but those responsible must be held accountable. Whether they pay or not, they must know they owe us . . . They must understand that they have destroyed the republic,\u201d he said, without specifying any further details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two years ago, \u0141uka\u0161enka signed a law to criminalize genocide denial, while officials and propaganda workers often try to pin genocide on opposition activists by calling them \u201cfascists.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hora\u2019s predecessor Andrej \u0160vied personally contributed content by editing the \u201cGenocide Against the Belarusian People During the Great Patriotic War\u201d textbook for 5th graders, in which he accused voters who took to the street to protest election fraud in 2020 of using Nazi symbols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
