December 24, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on December 23 with new reports coming in of harassment at a pre-trial detention center in Kalinkavi\u010dy, Homiel region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jailed regime critics held there were banned from using mattresses, the Viasna Human Rights Center said. Wardens reportedly wake them up several times at night and require them to state their names. Prisoners are fed cold leftovers brought in from a local canteen. There are also no cups or glasses provided, so prisoners have to drink from the tap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna\u2019s activists also reported more extremist designations for online content, including Belarusian PEN on Telegram and the Facebook page by the People\u2019s Embassy of Belarus in Brazil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Journalist Dzianis Iva\u0161yn, serving a lengthy prison term in a politically-motivated case, is held in a punishment cell, recently released rights defender U\u0142adzimir \u0141abkovi\u010d said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka instructed newly appointed top security officials \u2013 Prosecutor General D\u017amitryj Hora and Kanstancin By\u010dak, the Investigative Committee chief \u2013 to suppress any attempts at \u201crevolutionary struggle against the existing state system,\u201d Pozirk<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A coalition of human rights organizations urged<\/a> the Belarusian authorities to stop forcibly deporting pardoned dissidents, says a statement posted by Viasna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, rights groups added 10 more people to their list of political prisoners. They are imprisoned on charges ranging from insulting \u0141uka\u0161enka to calling for sanctions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of December 24, human rights defenders identified at least 1,132 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
