December 27, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Lithuania withdrew from the Ottawa Treaty, an international agreement that prohibits the use and production of anti-personnel landmines, BNS<\/em> reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vilnius notified the UN Secretary General of the move six months ago, after Lithuanian MPs voted for the withdrawal in May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lithuanian defense ministry is already planning to purchase or produce anti-personnel mines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, Estonia, Latvia and Poland withdrew from the Ottawa Treaty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March, Belarus signaled that it would not terminate the agreement but rather rely on Russian nuclear weapons for defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus joined the Ottawa Convention in 2003, around the same time as Lithuania. Russia is not a party to the treaty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
