December 29, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Three Poles and two Russians were arrested on December 18 in Poland for organizing the imports of wood products from Belarus and Russia in violation of sanctions, the District Prosecutor’s Office in Gda\u0144sk reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The suspects have been charged with violating laws that regulate imports of plywood and wooden slats that are subject to non-tariff regulations and the European Union\u2019s sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group used various mechanisms to bypass sanctions, prosecutors said, listing simulation of deliveries allegedly in fulfilment of previously concluded contracts with Russian and Belarusian counterparties. The suspects also falsely claimed that wood products originated in Kazakhstan or Turkey and allegedly misclassified goods with incorrect customs tariff codes to evade sanctions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, Polish prosecutors and customs authorities launched an investigation into customs fraud and violation of the EU sanctions regarding the imports of birch plywood from Belarus and Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An investigation released by the Earthsight environmental non-profit in January confirmed supplies of Belarusian plywood to the EU and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three years ago, the EU banned the import of Belarusian wood products, such as lumber, briquettes, fuel pellets, plywood and wood boards, to punish Minsk for its complicity in the Russian war against Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
