{"id":169933,"date":"2025-12-29T17:21:21","date_gmt":"2025-12-29T14:21:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/169933\/"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"myanmar-activists-criticize-presence-of-fake-observers-from-belarus-at-its-sham-election","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/169933\/","title":{"rendered":"Myanmar activists criticize presence of \u201cfake\u201d observers from Belarus at its \u201csham\u201d election"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>December 29, <em>Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Activist group Justice for Myanmar has criticized Belarus for sending what it called fake observers to the \u201cMyanmar junta&#8217;s sham election\u201d held on December 28.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belarus\u2019 Central Election Commission (CEC) sent a delegation led by Alaksej Ba\u0161an, CEC deputy chairman, to monitor voting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Myanmar military is staging a sham \u2018election\u2019 to manufacture legitimacy while it slaughters civilians with total impunity,\u201d Justice for Myanmar said. \u201cIt\u2019s crucial that governments don\u2019t buy into the facade, stand with the Myanmar people and reject the sham election and its results.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe denounce the countries supporting this sham election and sending fake observers, notably Belarus, Russia, China and Vietnam, which are profiting from the junta through business interests with the Myanmar military and arms sales,\u201d the statement reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belarusian leader Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka visited Myanmar in late November for talks with the junta leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u0141uka\u0161enka already met with acting President Min Aung Hlaing in Minsk on March 7. Belarusian Defense Minister Viktar Chrenin visited Myanmar later that month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Myanmar\u2019s military government held the first round of voting&nbsp;nearly five years after it seized power in a coup, prompting widespread opposition and spiraling into civil war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Observers say the junta, with China&#8217;s support, is seeking to legitimize its power as it seeks a way out of the devastating stalemate, <em>BBC<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dozens of people were charged for disrupting or opposing the polls under a new law which carries severe punishments, including the death penalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Film director Mike Tee, actor Kyaw Win Htut and comedian Ohn Daing were among the prominent figures convicted under the law against disrupting polls, which was enacted in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The military has been fighting on several fronts, against both armed resistance groups who oppose the coup and ethnic armies that have their own militias.
