December 31, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Latvian border guards prevented 13 attempts by undocumented migrants to enter the country outside the official checkpoints on December 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland and Lithuania did not report any incidents that day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Irregular migration from Belarus into Latvia is artificial in nature, and Riga will lift enhanced border protections only if Minsk stops migration pressure, Guntis Puj\u0101ts, chief of the Latvian State Border Guard, told LTV1<\/em> earlier this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s summer was the most difficult in terms of migration pressure, while December was relatively calm, except for one day when 69 undocumented migrants were stopped at the border, LSM reported, citing Puj\u0101ts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors have reported 42,708 irregular entries since the start of 2025, 17.8 percent more than in the same period in 2024. Poland remained the primary target of irregular migration with 29,055 attempts this year, followed by Latvia with 12,005 attempts and Lithuania with 1,648 attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
