January 4, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>Belarusian Foreign Minister Maksim Ry\u017eanko\u016d and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov condemned the United States January 3 strikes on Venezuela during a phone call yesterday, the Russian foreign ministry reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both stressed the need to release captured Venezuelan ruler Nicolas Maduro, reinstate him as the head of state and resolve the crisis in accordance with international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, the Belarusian foreign ministry released a statement denouncing \u201cthe armed aggression\u201d against Venezuela and warning of a direct threat to international peace and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On January 3, the United States launched a series of strikes targeting Venezuela and captured Nicolas Maduro and his wife. The move followed months of mounting pressure from Washington, a US military buildup in the Caribbean and strikes on small Venezuelan vessels accused of shipping drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maduro had been in power in Venezuela since 2013. Democratic countries sanctioned Venezuelan entities and individuals associated with his government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
