January<\/strong> 5, <\/strong>Pozirk<\/em><\/strong>.<\/em><\/strong> Belarus\u2019 petrochemical giant Bie\u0142naftachim monitors new decisions by unfriendly countries, finds willing partners and develops own technological solutions to cope with Western sanctions, says its CEO Ilja Ikan in an interview published on January 5.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have long been adapting to restrictions imposed by the United States, Canada and a number of other countries and know that it is impossible to take care of everything,\u201d Vestnik Belneftekhima, <\/em>an industry-specific magazine, quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPreventive work helps us mitigate the most serious and non-obvious risks, such as complications with payments through third countries, changes in the rules of transit or the blocking of supplies of critically important equipment,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The state petrochemical giant is finding willing partners in friendly countries to supply materials and spare parts, he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the sanctions, Bie\u0142naftachim companies sell their products in 47 countries, seeking to increase sales in Africa and Latin America. For instance, the Hrodna Azot nitrogen fertilizer company is exploring highly competitive markets, such as Brazil, Mexico and Cote d\u2019Ivoire. The Homel Chemical Factory has expanded to Armenia, Georgia, Moldova and Mexico, and increased sales in Turkey and Cote d\u2019Ivoire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur tires are represented in the markets of Bangladesh, Venezuela and South Africa. Moreover, we are finalizing arrangements to supply truck tires to Cameroon,\u201d Ikan added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The company\u2019s key markets remain Russia and the Eurasian Economic Union. Bie\u0142naftachim operates two oil refineries that refine Russian oil on a give-and-take basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States sanctions have targeted the following companies: the trading arm Belarusian Oil Trade House, Bie\u0142naftachim, Bie\u0142naftachim USA, the Bie\u0142\u0161yna tire manufacturer, Hrodna Azot, the chemical fiber plant Hrodna Chimva\u0142akno, the paint and varnish manufacturer \u0141akafarba, the Naftan refinery and the glass fiber producer Po\u0142ack \u0160k\u0142ova\u0142akno. Washington suspended restrictions in 2015 after Minsk had released political prisoners, but reintroduced sanctions in 2021 citing human rights abuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Canada imposed sanctions in 2022 to punish Minsk for its role in the Russian invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Union imposed sanctions on Bie\u0142naftachim executives and its companies in August 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
