January 6, Pozirk<\/em><\/strong>. Lithuanian authorities arrested a 25-year-old Ukrainian national for transporting undocumented foreigners who had entered the European Union irregularly via Belarus, the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The incident took place on December 31 in the Marijampol\u0117 district, near the border with Poland\u2019s Podlaskie voivodeship. The Ukrainian man was driving a Peugeot car carrying six Bangladeshi nationals, aged 21 to 36, to Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All reportedly applied for asylum in Latvia a few months ago and were not allowed to leave the country. They did not have any other documents to prove their identity or citizenship, nor any papers granting them the right to enter the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuanian officials launched a pre-trial investigation into the illegal transportation of people across the border. The suspect is under arrest for three months and may face up to eight years in prison if convicted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors did not allow at least 42,714 third-country foreigners to cross irregularly via Belarus in 2025, with the number of attempts rising 17.7 percent from 2024, according to Pozirk<\/em>\u2018s analysis of border guards\u2019 data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
