January 9, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> In new evidence of politically motivated reprisals, Belarus\u2019 interior ministry has added 26 names to its list of extremists, bringing the total to 6,175.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those added include Jana Caruk and Maryja Batalonak, a Lithuanian national, who were convicted of forming an extremist group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caruk was sentenced to four years in prison for alleged association with Gorodskoy Ogorod Maris Mar, a community designated as extremist by the Committee for State Security (KGB), the Viasna Human Rights Center reported. Batalonak is also said to be associated with the same community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the other additions, Valancin To\u0142ka\u010d was sentenced to three years in prison for alleged communications with Bie\u0142aruski Hajun, a now-defunct organization that monitored military activity in Belarus, according to Viasna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vital Ku\u0161niarevi\u010d, Siarhiej Man\u017eos and Vital Achrymienka are serving prison sentences for allegedly facilitating extremism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nineteen of the 20 individuals added to the list who are serving sentences of home confinement rather than imprisonment were convicted of the same offense. They are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar Ku\u010dynski, who also appears to be serving a sentence of \u201crestricted freedom\u201d in home confinement, was convicted of mass disorder, apparently in connection with the peaceful postelection protests of 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2025, the interior ministry added 1,341 names to its list of \u201cextremists,\u201d a designation most often applied to government opponents. By comparison, 2,252 names were added in 2022, followed by 1,387 in 2023 and 1,169 in 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
