January<\/strong> 13,<\/strong> <\/em>Pozirk<\/em><\/strong>.<\/em><\/strong> Members of the Belarusian National Assembly have denounced threats against Mexico in response to President Donald Trump\u2019s statement that the United States may take military action on land against drug cartels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThreats of the use of force, attempts to cast doubt on the legitimacy of the national leadership and pressure on internal political processes are a blatant violation of fundamental norms and principles of international law,\u201d said the parliamentary group for cooperation with Mexico in its Telegram channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The group denounced \u201cany forms of external diktat, blackmail and power pressure\u201d on Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview to Fox News, Trump asserted that his administration had \u201ceradicated 97 percent of the drugs coming in by water\u201d and that the focus now would be land-based operations against the cartels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He claimed cartels were responsible for huge numbers of US deaths from drugs (figures like 250,000\u2013300,000 annually were mentioned), using this to justify a tougher stance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On January 3, the United States launched a series of strikes targeting Venezuela and captured Nicolas Maduro, whom Washington accused of drug crimes, and his wife. The move followed months of mounting pressure from Washington, a US military buildup in the Caribbean and strikes on small Venezuelan vessels accused of shipping drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maduro had been in power in Venezuela since 2013. Democratic countries sanctioned Venezuelan entities and individuals associated with his government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
