January 13, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>There are currently no plans to increase the amount of Belarusian-language content on the state-run television channels, the information ministry\u2019s Telegram channels said, citing minister Marat Marka\u016d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The TV does not offer a lot of Belarusian-language shows, which \u201creflects the general situation in society,\u201d the official said, citing a 2025 poll by the government-controlled Institute of Sociology that reportedly showed that only 1.1 percent of television viewers prefer to watch shows in the Belarusian language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus 3<\/em>, a state-run TV channel focused on culture and featuring the largest share of Belarusian-language programming, attracts about 2.5 percent of viewers, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following the crackdown on the 2020 postelection protests in Belarus, Russification and indoctrination practices picked up pace in the country. The government in Minsk shows no interest in popularizing the Belarusian language. For decades, Belarusian was the prerogative of public initiatives and organizations, which the Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka regime dissolved or pushed out of Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a census, the number of Belarusians who consider Belarusian their mother tongue fell from 85.6 percent in 1999 to 61.2 percent in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although 40 percent of schools provide instruction in Belarusian, only about 10 percent of the country\u2019s students, just over 100,000, study there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
