January 15, Pozirk<\/em>. <\/strong>New cases of politically-motivated persecution documented in Belarus on January 14 included two sentences on extremism-related charges that authorities routinely use to persecute their political opponents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Natalla Ba\u010durynskaja, a Homiel resident, was given three years in prison on charges of extremism financing, the Homiel branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center said. The charge is usually used to prosecute people for donations to opposition groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IT professional Alena Kulikova was convicted in Brest of facilitating extremist activities and was likely given a restricted freedom term, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vasil Hra\u010dycha, a Belarusian volunteer who fought Russia alongside Ukrainian forces and is now serving a five-year prison term in Belarus, was transferred to Penal Colony No 2 in Babrujsk, Mahilo\u016d region, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, rights groups declared nine more people as political prisoners. All recently added people are serving prison terms on protest-related charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of January 15, human rights defenders identified at least 1,130 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
