January 15,<\/strong> Pozirk.<\/strong><\/em> The UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) has registered a complaint by Respect-Protect-Fulfill (RPF), a Belarusian NGO, about discrimination against Alena \u0141azar\u010dyk, considered a political prisoner by human rights organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CEDAW urged Belarusian authorities to give the prisoner access to medical assistance outside the correction facility, access to a lawyer and ensure proper detention conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141azar\u010dyk has been in detention since December 2021. In September 2022, she was sentenced to eight years in prison on extremism-related and other politically-motivated charges. Later, a judge added 18 months to her sentence for allegedly defying the prison administration\u2019s orders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 51-year old activist has lost weight and has dental issues that cannot be treated at the detention facility \u2013 Penal Colony No. 24 in Re\u010dyca, Homeil region, RPF said. According to RPF, she spent time in \u201cinhumane conditions in a cold and dump cell without normal sleep and access to independent medical examination.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
