January 20, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> The Chernobyl nuclear power station has lost all off-site power along with power lines to other nuclear power stations, Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has said on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSeveral Ukrainian electrical substations vital for nuclear safety were affected by widespread military activity this morning,\u201d he added, noting that the IAEA is following all developments to assess the impact on nuclear safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the onset of winter, Russia has intensified strikes on Ukraine\u2019s energy infrastructure, leaving residents in many cities, including Kyiv, facing disruptions to heating, electricity and water supplies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few weeks ago, Sergiy Tarakanov, Chernobyl plant director, warned of the risk of a direct hit by a missile or combat drone on the Chernobyl nuclear power plant\u2019s containment structure or an impact nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Russian Iskander short-range ballistic missile system, designed to destroy bunkers, poses the main threat, as no one can guarantee the shelter facility would withstand an attack, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chernobyl\u2019s New Safe Confinement (NSC) sustained serious damage after a Russian drone strike in February 2024, losing several of its main functions, yet radiation levels remain\u00a0stable and within limits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The plant was among the first sites targeted by Russia when it launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, including through the Belarus border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
