January 23, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> A delegation from Belarus\u2019 Central Election Commission (CEC) arrived in Myanmar to observe the final phase of a general election scheduled for January 25 in 63 localities across the country, the CEC press office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The delegation, including members of the pro-government Bie\u0142aja Ru\u015b party and trade unionists loyal to Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, met with Aung Saw Win, a member of the Union Election Commission, and U Bo Htay, mayor of Yangon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myanmar\u2019s military government held the first round of voting in late December, nearly five years after it seized power in a coup, which prompted a widespread opposition and a civil war. The second phase of the election took place on January 11. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Activist group Justice for Myanmar denounced Belarus for sending what it called fake observers to the first phase of \u201cMyanmar junta\u2019s sham election\u201d on December 28. Belarus, Russia, China and Vietnam, which sent observers, “are profiting from the junta through business interests with the Myanmar military and arms sales,\u201d the group said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Myanmar’s junta, with China\u2019s support, is seeking to legitimize its power as it seeks a way out of the devastating stalemate, BBC<\/em> reported. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dozens of people were charged for disrupting or opposing the polls under a new law which carries severe punishments, including the death penalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u0141uka\u0161enka visited Myanmar in November 2025 for talks with the junta leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
