January 26, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Ukraine is helping the United States secure the release of Belarusian dissidents and is seeking Washington\u2019s support to free Ukrainian political prisoners held in Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told journalists yesterday in Vilnius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRussia is holding thousands of Ukrainians captive, and you know how difficult negotiations over exchanges are,\u201d he said. \u201cRussia does not want to release them. When we exchange equal numbers, we are primarily referring to prisoners of war. It is even more difficult with political prisoners, because they [Russians] are unwilling to release them. We are working on this and have some experience, but it cannot yet be called a success, as not everyone is home. Nevertheless, we continue this work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington has taken up the issue of securing the release of jailed Belarusian regime critics, recognizing that Ukraine has relevant experience in such efforts, he added. \u201cWe are helping the United States in this matter,\u201d Zelensky said, noting that some results are already visible. The politician was referring to the December release of 123 Belarusian dissidents, most of whom were taken to Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kyiv will continue assisting Belarusian political prisoners and looks to the US for support in securing the release of Ukrainian nationals held in Russian captivity, the politician added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
