January 26, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>Minsk needs to stop supporting Russia\u2019s war on Ukraine and restore democratic standards if it wants to end its international isolation, Lithuanian President Gitanas Naus\u0117da told journalists yesterday in Vilnius.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The release of jailed dissidents is a necessary step but is not sufficient, especially as politically-motivated arrests continue in Belarus, he noted. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician stressed that the European Union has imposed sanctions on Belarus for multiple reasons, with human rights abuses being only one factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus continues active support of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, allowing Moscow to use Belarusian territory to plan and carry out attacks on Ukraine, Naus\u0117da said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also described Belarus as a very significant source of risk in the region, citing the deployment of the Russian Oreshnik missile system and Russian tactical nuclear weapons, along with the construction of new nuclear reactors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While prisoner releases signal some progress, Belarus must end its cooperation with Russia and return to democracy, Naus\u0117da stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
