January 26, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The progress of joint projects with Russia is not particularly impressive, Juryj Sieliviersta\u016d, Belarus\u2019 new ambassador to Russia and former finance minister, told the state-run Belarus 1<\/em> in an interview aired yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The official linked the trend to \u201cexcessive expectations that we would be able to quickly set up some kind of production site or cluster and purchase equipment,\u201d but this \u201cturned out to be not as easy as it seemed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stressing the need for profitability, the diplomat said the strategy must be reviewed to determine the best way forward, with the speed of implementation and potential returns guiding decisions on new projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus wants to keep trade with Russia growing, with attention on both the product range and sales, not just profits, Sieliviersta\u016d said. Belarus should focus on supplying high-quality, high-margin products to Russia rather than selling large volumes of cheap goods, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka appointed Sieliviersta\u016d as Belarusian ambassador to Russia last week, giving him broad powers, including advancing national interests in the Union State with Russia. He replaced Alaksandar Raho\u017enik, who was dismissed just after 18 months in diplomatic service and was sent to chair the Vitebsk Regional Executive Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sieliviersta\u016d plans to arrive in Moscow by the end of this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
