January<\/strong> 27,<\/strong> Pozirk<\/strong><\/em>.<\/em><\/strong> The Lithuanian environment ministry said it had informed Minsk of Vilnius\u2019s willingness to participate in assessments of the cross-border environmental impact of the temporary nuclear waste storage to be built in Belarus before 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk considers building the one square kilometer site in the Hrodna, Homiel or Mahilo\u016d region. The Belarusian government is expected to make a decision this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk notified Lithuania of its plan in December and presented a program of assessment to Vilnius, but the Lithuanian ministry said the paper lacks key technical details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian Radioactive Waste Management Organization was named in October the project owner, while the facility is to be built by the state-owned Bie\u0142enerhabud holding company, the general contractor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The parties were specified in Edict No. 349 \u201cOn Radioactive Waste Management Facilities\u201d signed by Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 19, the BelPol investigative group reported that Belarus will build the radioactive waste disposal facility near the Astraviec Nuclear Power Plant in the Hrodna region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The disposal site is designed to contain intermediate- and low-level waste\u2014filters, ion-exchange resins, contaminated materials, clothes and tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia\u2019s Rosatom commissioned the nuclear plant in Astraviec in the fall of 2023. Unit 1 has supplied electricity to the grid since November 2020, and Unit 2 since May 2023. The units began commercial operation in June 2021 and November 2023, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government plans to build a third unit and connect it to the greed between 2035 and 2038.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
