January 28, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on January 27 as a man was tried in Brest during an off-site court hearing held at the premises of one of the <\/em><\/strong>state-run companies, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The defendant was accused of insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka. The outcome of the trial remains unknown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The information ministry announced extremist content designations for a song by the Krambambula band, several Facebook accounts, including one linked to Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, oksana_aus_belarus<\/em> on Instagram, as well as Free Belarus Women<\/em> and Radyjo Svaboda | Bie\u0142aru\u015b<\/em> on Threads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exiled rights defender Leanid Sudalenka urged Minsk to free jailed dissident Natalla Levaja, who is pregnant and is due to give birth in March. In 2024, the woman was given six years in prison on extremism-related charges linked to donations to opposition initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian prisons stopped accepting money transfers from Russia and other countries, MAYDAY TEAM <\/em>reported. As a result, imprisoned foreigners are among the most vulnerable, as they are left without financial support. In addition, Belarusian banks delayed setting up money transfers to prisons from bank cards. Inmates\u2019 families can send funds only from post offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exiled activist D\u017amitryj Furmana\u016d received a message, presumably from Belarusian security officers who inquired whether he still hoped to return to Belarus, Viasna said. The group noted that other exiles have reported similar cases of harassment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of January 28, human rights defenders identified at least 1,150 political prisoners, but the real number is considerably higher because of many undocumented cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
