January 28, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Jailed Belarusian dissidents face constant punishments for alleged violations, ongoing psychological pressure and harassment from fellow inmates recruited by prison authorities, Ale\u015b Bialacki, Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has told Russian independent Dozhd <\/em>media outlet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bialacki was one of 123 prisoners exchanged by Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka for US sanctions relief on Belarusian potash fertilizers in mid-December. He was forced to leave the country and taken to Lithuania. The Nobel Prize laureate had served a 10-year prison sentence given in a politically-motivated case at Penal Colony No 9 in Horki, Mahi\u0142o\u016d region, known for its harsh conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bialacki said he spent 38 days in a punishment cell and six months in a closed prison, enduring extreme cold. “You are there without heating, wearing only a shirt and thin pants, forced to sleep on a bed made of iron bars. . .\u00a0 You basically sleep half on iron and half on wooden boards. That is, of course, if you have enough strength to sleep at all, because you keep waking up from the cold.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cells in the closed prison are tiny, with bunks fastened away during the day and all personal items cleared out, former prisoner noted. \u201cIt is so damp that when you wipe the painted walls, you have to wring out the towel. . . You just have to hope you have enough physical health to endure it all, that your body can withstand it,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bialacki also praised sanctions policy on Minsk as effective. \u201cIf it weren\u2019t for these political and economic sanctions, we would still be held here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
