January 28,<\/strong> Pozirk.<\/strong><\/em> Belarusian human rights defenders have identified 8 more political prisoners, taking their total to 1,158, said the Viasna Human Rights Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maksim Dudarha, Siarhiej Vasiukievi\u010d, Alaksandar Niedviedski, U\u0142adzimir Joraje\u016d and Alaksiej Isaje\u016d were convicted of extremism, the charge routinely used to prosecute political opponents. Vital Vypra\u017ekin is awaiting trial on the same charge over alleged communications with the Bie\u0142aruski Hajun resistance group that monitored movements of Russian military equipment in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksiej \u0160y\u0142ovi\u010d and Siarhiej Litvinko were convicted of insulting and defaming Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dudarha was sentenced to four years in prison and Isaje\u016d to five years in an open-type correctional facility. The other sentences are unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna, Belarusian PEN, Barys Zvozska\u016d Human Rights House, Lawtrend, the Belarusian Association of Journalists, The Belarusian Helsinki Committee, Human Constanta and Pravavaja Inicyjatyva signed the declaration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rights defenders demanded the immediate release of all political prisoners and the end of reprisals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
