January 29, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will conduct a scheduled inspection at the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Astraviec, Hrodna region, on January 29 and 30, the Department of Nuclear and Radiation Safety at the Belarusian emergencies ministry reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inspection will focus on the physical inventory of nuclear material, the maintenance of IAEA storage and surveillance systems and a review of records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IAEA also plans an Operational Safety Review Team (OSART) mission in Belarus for the first quarter of 2026 to evaluate the NPP\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NPP in Astraviec was built some 10 miles off the Lithuanian border with a Russian loan. Units 1 and 2 started commercial operation in June 2021 and November 2023, respectively. Lithuania views the plant as unsafe and describes it as a \u201cgeopolitical weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian government plans to build a third unit and connect it to the grid between 2035 and 2038.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
