January 30, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> A district court in Kyiv has denied bail to a Belarusian journalist arrested earlier this week on suspicion of spying for Belarus\u2019 Committee for State Security (KGB), Ukrinform reported on January 29, citing Maryana Hayevskaya-Kovbasiuk, a spokeswoman for Ukraine\u2019s Prosecutor General\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said on January 27 that it had arrested a 35-year-old Belarusian woman in Kyiv on suspicion of acting as a deeply undercover KGB agent for more than a decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the SBU, she was sent from Minsk to Ukraine in 2020 to operate as an agent under the cover of journalistic activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The woman reportedly obtained a job at one of Ukraine\u2019s leading media outlets before Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Using her position and professional contacts, she allegedly expanded her network among Ukrainian politicians, military personnel and foreign diplomats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SBU released several audio recordings in which the suspect is heard speaking with her presumed KGB handler, who allegedly promised her remuneration of \u20ac3,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agency added that the woman was tasked with collecting information on Belarusians and Russians assisting Ukraine and attempted to identify potential candidates for recruitment by the KGB. The SBU did not disclose the suspect\u2019s name and blurred her face in released videos and photographs. However, biographical details suggest she may be Belarusian journalist Ina Karda\u0161. Ukrainian media outlets covering the case have also mentioned this name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
