January 30, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Discussions of lifting the European Union’s sanctions against Belarus are premature as long as Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s regime continues the same policies, Andrius Kubilius, the European Union’s commissioner for defence and space from Lithuania, has told LRT<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t see any reason why Europe, which imposed sanctions because of \u0141uka\u0161enka’s actions, should now lift them. Have those actions truly changed to warrant such a move? Or is this initiative being driven by pressure from the United States?\u201d Delfi<\/em> quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEurope and Lithuania must take a clear and consistent stance,\u201d Kubilius said, linking the lifting of sanctions to changes in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, Lithuanian Foreign Minister K\u0119stutis Budrys announced that the EU will \u201cvery likely\u201d extend its sanctions on Belarusian potash fertilizers after February 28, ruling out any discussions on resuming transit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuanian President Gitanas Naus\u0117da also reaffirmed his country\u2019s opposition to resuming the transit of Belarusian potash fertilizers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lithuania banned the transit of Belarusian fertilizers in early 2022 in line with US sanctions, while the European Union adopted similar restrictions later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington announced that it will be lifting sanctions on Belarusian potash fertilizers following the meeting between Aleksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka and John Coale, US special envoy to Belarus, in Minsk in mid-December. The negotiations resulted in the release of 123 designated political prisoners, including prominent opposition figures and politicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last month, the US Treasury published the\u00a0general license<\/a>\u00a0authorizing transactions involving the Belarusian Potash Company, potash giant Bie\u0142aruskalij and its subsidiary Agrorozkvit LLC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
