February 2, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Belarus\u2019 European Union neighbors reported 28 attempts by undocumented third-country migrants to cross the border from Belarus in January, an unusually cold month in the country.  That was the lowest monthly number of incidents recorded since the start of 2023, according to Pozirk\u2019s analysis of data from border guard services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU neighbors reported 96 attempts in January 2024, while hundreds of illegal entries have been reported during the other months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of the year, Lithuania reported 15 incidents; Latvia has not recorded a single irregular entry; and Poland prevented 13 crossings. The decline is natural for the cold season with more incidents expected when warmer weather sets in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus\u2019 western neighbors reported as many as 42,714 irregular entries in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of people desperate to cross into the EU surged in spring 2021 after Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, angered by EU sanctions, had indicated that Minsk would not prevent asylum seekers from Africa and Asia from using Belarus as a route to the EU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In June 2021, the Belarusian government suspended a readmission agreement with the EU in response to sanctions that followed the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Latvia, Lithuania and Poland call the migration crisis a \u201chybrid attack\u201d orchestrated by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
