February 7, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>Although Belarus\u2019 opposition has struggled to engage with Georgia\u2019s current government, it has managed to secure a promise that Georgian authorities will not deport Belarusian opposition activists to Belarus, where they could face politically motivated persecution, \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja said at a hearing in Warsaw on February 7.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not that we have bad relations with this government \u2014 we have no relations at all. They are reluctant to engage and do not respond to our requests,\u201d she said in response to a question from Georgia-based activist Maryna Zialonaja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe only promise we managed to receive from this government, indirectly, is that they will not deport Belarusians to Belarus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She added that Georgia would not recognize Belarus\u2019 expired passports and would not grant asylum to political activists. \u201cThat\u2019s what they told us,\u201d Cichano\u016dskaja said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to her, the opposition has mechanisms in place to evacuate activists from Georgia in emergencies. \u201cMany thanks to our human rights defenders and solidarity foundations for helping us do this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut I don\u2019t have a good answer for Belarusians in Georgia,\u201d she continued. \u201cIf you can, and while you still have a valid passport, consider relocating to other countries. There is much better communication with the government in Armenia.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than 10,000 Belarusians are reportedly living in Georgia after fleeing persecution in their home country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Georgia has not granted a single asylum request from Belarusians under the Georgian Dream government of pro-Russian oligarch Bidzina Ivanishvili. However, Belarusians can legally stay in the country for up to one year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
