February 9, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> A judge in Homiel sentenced a former chairman of the Re\u010dyca district in the Homiel region to seven years in prison on charges of abusing power, the Prosecutor General’s Office reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The man was also fined 31,500 rubels (nearly $11,000) and was barred from holding administrative positions for five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prosecutors said the defendant \u201cknowingly gave illegal instructions\u201d to heads of local farms to falsify state statistical reports in order to conceal livestock deaths. His actions reportedly led to criminal charges against at least 20 other officials, who were accused of undermining the authority and prestige of local government bodies, they added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authorities have not disclosed the defendant\u2019s name, but last October media reported on the arrest of Vital Pan\u010danka, a former head of the Re\u010dyca district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
