February 9, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are carrying out a scheduled inspection at the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) and the Sosny nuclear research facility near Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inspection at the NPP in Astraviec, Hrodna region, will run from February 9 to 15, with the check at Sosny expected on February 13, the department of Nuclear and Radiation Safety at the Belarusian emergencies ministry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experts will control a physical inventory of nuclear material, technical maintenance of IAEA safeguards and monitoring systems and review reporting documentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IAEA also plans an Operational Safety Review Team (OSART) mission in Belarus for the first quarter of 2026 to evaluate the NPP\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NPP in Astraviec was built some 10 miles off the Lithuanian border with a Russian loan. Units 1 and 2 started commercial operation in June 2021 and November 2023, respectively. Lithuania views the plant as unsafe and describes it as a \u201cgeopolitical weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian government plans to build a third unit and connect it to the grid between 2035 and 2038.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
