January 8, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>Belarus\u2019 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ale\u015b Bialacki met in Oslo on 10 February with members of the Storting, Norway\u2019s unicameral parliament, including its president Masud Gharahkhani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Viasna Human Rights Center, Bialacki met with the Storting\u2019s delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly to discuss the human rights situation in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gharahkhani stressed the importance of meeting personally with Bialacki, who \u201cdespite huge personal difficulties has not backed down one step from his fight for human rights and democracy in Belarus.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The situation of political prisoners in Belarus was discussed separately, with the delegation\u2019s chairperson Marius Arion Nilsen describing the problem of politically-motivated imprisonment in Belarus as acute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bialacki visited the Storting at the invitation of its delegation to the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly. Members of the Norwegian parliament\u2019s delegation to the PACE Parliamentary Assembly also participated in the meetings.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bialacki was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2022, when he was still in prison. He was one of 123 prisoners exchanged by Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka for US sanctions relief on Belarusian potash fertilizers on December 13. He was forced to leave the country and taken to Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was arrested along with his associates in July 2021 and sentenced to 10 years in prison on charges of smuggling cash and financing mass disorder \u2013 charges widely believed to be politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was also imprisoned from 2011 to 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
