January 13, Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong> Courts designated about 1,300 accounts and pieces of information as \u201cextremist\u201d content at the request of prosecutors in 2025, the Prosecutor General\u2019s Office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judges imposed approximately 78 million rubels ($27 million) in fines on individuals for possessing extremist content, it added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government introduced the \u201cextremist content\u201d designation in the wake of the 2020 mass protests over alleged election fraud, using it to punish Belarusians for following independent media outlets and social media accounts critical of the authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian law enforcement officers conduct random checks of people\u2019s phones to see whom they follow. Those found to possess or share links to banned media outlets and accounts face fines or jail terms of up to 15 days under Article 19.11 of the Code of Administrative Offenses. The article does not provide for penalties for producing banned content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police have forced some detainees to confess on camera to following \u201cextremist\u201d content and to post video confessions on Telegram channels in what rights groups describe as an attempt to intimidate the public. State television journalists have reportedly been involved in recording such videos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The extremist content list contains thousands of entries, making it difficult for people to monitor updates and remove blacklisted content from their devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
