February 14, <\/strong>Pozirk.<\/strong> <\/em>Russia is strengthening its military presence in Belarus and is harnessing the country\u2019s economy for war-related needs, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja told Andrius Kubilius, the European Union\u2019s commissioner for defence and space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politicians met yesterday on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Cichano\u016dskaja\u2019s aide Franak Via\u010dorka told Pozirk.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opposition leader cited the deployment of Russian tactical nuclear weapons and the Oreshnik missile system on Belarusian territory as evidence, urging the EU to attach strict conditions to communication with Minsk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities are seeking sanctions relief without offering concessions, she noted, arguing that sanctions remain effective as long as the regime continues to seek their lifting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commenting on Washington\u2019s efforts to free Belarusian dissidents, Cichano\u016dskaja said that US sanctions against Minsk could potentially be eased in exchange for the release of people. In contrast, European sanctions should remain focused on securing democratic changes in Belarus, she noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
