February 14, Pozirk.<\/em> <\/strong>The European Union should maintain sanctions on Belarus as long as politically-motivated reprisals in the country continue, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja told Kajsa Ollongren, the EU special representative for human rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference alongside her husband, former political prisoner Siarhiej Cichano\u016dski, the politician highlighted the ongoing crackdown in Belarus. Reprisals in Belarus extend beyond imprisonment of regime critics with bans on independent media and opposition parties along with restrictions on Belarusians\u2019 freedom of movement, she noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of jailed dissidents is not dropping as politically-motivated arrests and trials continue, she added, warning that the human rights situation shows no sign of improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe problem is not the lack of dialogue, but the Belarusian regime\u2019s unwillingness to improve and change the situation,\u201d she said, urging the EU to maintain pressure on Minsk until there is tangible progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
